Tension prevailed in the West Hawaibari Kuki Colony area under Teliamura police station of Khowai district on Tuesday following allegations of theft and drug-related activities. Local residents claimed that incidents of theft and alleged drug sales had been continuing in the area for some time, leading to growing resentment among residents.

According to local sources, residents detained two youths early Tuesday morning on allegations of involvement in drug-related activities. During questioning, the names of a local youth, identified as Kalu, and his brother allegedly emerged, following which the two were also detained by agitated residents.

In this manner, a total of four youths were reportedly detained by the locals. Residents also claimed that drug containers were recovered from the possessions of detained youths.

The incident triggered considerable tension in the locality. Agitated residents reportedly assaulted the four youths before handing them over to the Teliamura police.

On receiving information, police from Teliamura police station reached the spot and took all four youths into custody. Police have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the recovered containers and the allegations of drug-related activities.

Local residents claimed that a sense of fear had prevailed in the area for some time due to thefts and drug-related activities. Tuesday’s incident, they said, reflected the growing anger among residents.

However, the veracity of the allegations against the four detained youths, the nature of the recovered items and their actual connection, if any, with the alleged drug trade will be established only after the police investigation.

Residents of West Hawaibari Kuki Colony are now awaiting the outcome of the police probe.
