'Best way to end horrific war is to go for Peace Agreement': Trump drops ceasefire push after Putin meet

US President Donald Trump has dropped his push for a ceasefire in the Ukraine war after the Alaska summit and said Russia and Ukraine must go for a 'Peace Agreement'.

Calling his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin a "successful day," and said the ceasefire agreement often does "not hold up".

While Trump had earlier warned of "severe consequences" for Russia ahead of the Alaska Summit, his meeting with Putin failed to reach a concrete agreement to end the ongoing Ukraine war, though both leaders concluded that the talks were productive.

"A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO.

"It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up," Trump posted on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington DC and meet Trump to discuss all of the details regarding 'ending the killing and the war'.

In a statement, Zelenskyy wrote on X: "We had a long and substantive conversation with @POTUS. We started with one-on-one talks before inviting European leaders to join us. This call lasted for more than an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral conversation with President Trump. "

On Friday, Trump and Putin joined for a joint press briefing after meeting for more than two hours.

During the press briefing, Putin described the talks as a "constructive atmosphere of mutual respect."

"Today's agreement will be the starting point not only for the solution in Ukraine, but will also help us bring back business…between Russia and the U.S.," Putin was quoted as saying during the briefing by Fox News.

Trump described the meeting as 'extremely productive'.

Speaking on the peace deal, he was quoted as saying by Fox News: "There were many, many points that we agreed on, most of them, I would say. A couple of big ones that we haven't quite gotten there, but we've made some headway."
