Pakistan government increases premium fuel levy by PKR 200 per litre amid Middle East crisis

Citing a handout from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the development came after the premier virtually chaired a meeting on matters related to high-octane fuel used in “luxury vehicles,” reported Dawn News.

“The prime minister took notice that the levy on high-octane fuel used in the most expensive vehicles should be increased,” the statement said.

It added, “A levy of Rs 300 per litre will now be applicable on high-octane fuel used in the most expensive vehicles.”

According to the statement, the move is expected to generate savings of around Rs 9 billion per month for the government. These funds, as per the prime minister’s instructions, will be redirected to provide relief to the public.

The government further stated that the decision is aimed at reducing the overall burden on the economy. It comes as Pakistan has recently introduced austerity measures to address the fuel crisis triggered by the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran.
