Trump slams Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, says ‘I’m not happy’
US President Donald Trump has said he was not happy with the selection of new Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade said that Trump has told him, "I am not happy" when asked about the selection of the new Supreme Leader.
Hours before the official announcement on the selection of the new Supreme Leader was made, Trump told ABC News that without the US' approval the new leader would not 'last long'.
"He’s going to have to get approval from us," the president told ABC News. "If he doesn’t get approval from us he’s not going to last long. We want to make sure that we don’t have to go back every 10 years, when you don’t have a president like me that’s not going to do it."
He added, "I don’t want people to have to go back in five years and have to do the same thing again or worse let them have a nuclear weapon."
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has officially appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, more than a week after the death of Ali Khamenei in the US-Israel strikes.
In an official statement quoted by Tehran Times, the Assembly said: “After careful and extensive deliberations and drawing upon the authority granted under Article 108 of the Constitution, by the decisive vote of the honorable members of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei (may God protect him) has been appointed and introduced as the third Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We pray to Almighty God for continued grace and favour upon this country and its great people.”
The official X account of Ali Khamenei also confirmed the appointment, stating that the Assembly of Experts had named Mojtaba Khamenei as the third Leader of the Islamic Republic under Article 108 of the Constitution.
