According to sources quoted by AFP, the two countries have reached a preliminary understanding to extend the ceasefire and begin negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, an Axios report said the deal has only been “mostly agreed” to so far, and final approval from senior leaders on both sides is still pending.

Trump wants more time

The report said Trump has already been briefed on the framework agreement but has not immediately signed off on it.

Quoting a US official, Axios reported that the president said he “wants a couple of days to think about it” before taking a final decision.

Iran, too, has reportedly not formally accepted the proposal yet.

What’s included in the proposed deal

One of the key elements of the proposed agreement concerns the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil shipping routes.

Under the framework deal:

  • Iran would guarantee the free flow of commercial shipping through the strait
  • Tehran would not impose tolls or restrictions on vessels using the waterway
  • Iran would also be required to remove all naval mines from the area within 30 days

A US official quoted in the report said there would be “no harassment” of ships passing through the strait.

US naval blockade, oil sanctions also on table

The proposed deal also reportedly includes a phased rollback of the US naval blockade tied to the restoration of normal commercial shipping activity in the region.

Another major component involves sanctions relief.

According to the report, Washington is prepared to issue limited sanctions waivers that would allow Iran to resume oil exports more freely, potentially easing pressure on the Iranian economy.

Nuclear talks back on agenda

The framework agreement would also pave the way for fresh negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, an issue that has remained at the centre of tensions between Tehran and Washington for years.

The latest diplomatic push comes amid growing concerns over regional stability following months of military escalation involving the US, Israel and Iran.
