Amidst statewide prevailing tension over political demonstrations among ruling BJP and Tipra-Motha in rural and hilly areas of the state, sporadic violence reported from few parts of the state and after pitch-battle among the supporters of both parties, about one dozen supporters’ sustained injuries and a TSR jawans also suffered injuries.

Police sources said that on Wednesday, Tipra-Motha organized protest demonstrations and submitted their memorandum before all BDOs of 58 blocks towards the Governor demanding early Village Committee (VC) elections in ADC areas and supporters of BJP had also organize rallies and submitted memorandum before the authorities of ADC zonal and sub-zonal offices demanding execution of developmental works in hilly areas.

But, during the rallies by both parties, clashes were reported in Baijalbari and Taidu areas of Khowai district and Ompi Nagar, resulting in about dozen of supporters of both parties suffering injuries.

Police sources added that they have deployed a large number of security forces in all areas where political parties organized their rallies and barring some stray incidents in three separate places, the political programmes by both BJP and Tipra-Motha completed peacefully.

Sources said during the deputations in the Baijalbari area of Khowai, the rallies of both parties faced each other in a spot and they started pelting stones targeting each other. During pitch-battle altogether 10 supporters and TSR jawans suffered injuries. Immediately, large numbers of security forces cordoned the entire area and dispersed all supporters.

Similar clash has also been erupted at Taidu and Ampinagar areas, but timely action by police forces the situation controlled within hours.

Sources added that when some unruly supporters of Tipra-Motha during their demonstration started pelting stones towards the supporters of BJP and they also ransacked the Ampinagar Mandal office and Gamako branch office of BJP. Within minutes the situation turned volatile and both party supporters started pelting stones targeting each other. As a result, four supporters of BJP and one supporter of Motha suffered injuries.

On Wednesday evening BJP Janajati Morch’s general secretary David Debbarma filed an FIR against a few supporters of Motha at West Agartala police station along with three of their injured supporters. Speaking with media persons, Debbarma alleged that when their supporters peacefully submitted their deputation before the Sub-zonal office at Simna, a group of Motha supporters attacked them and injured their four supporters. He said that after primary treatment at GB Hospital, they rushed to West Agartala police station and registered their complaint against miscreants of Motha.

Meanwhile, Tipra-Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarma in a social media post said that “if ma death can bring a solution then let it be so! This culture has ruined us and this is the reason why we have become slaves in the last 75 years. One day when I am no longer around you will realize the sacrifices of ours.” He also condemned the violence held during the protest and burning of his effigy by BJP supporters.

However, police said that after the attack and counter attack, the situation in three separate places including Taidu, Padmabil and Ampinagar are under control and large numbers of security forces were deployed in these areas.
