Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura and Chancellor of National Law University (NLU) Tripura, Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao, inaugurated the two-day Deeksharambh Programme 2026 at NLU Tripura on Sunday, marking the beginning of the academic journey of the university’s fourth batch of students.
The programme, held on August 16 and 17, was attended by Justice S. D. Purkayastha, Judge of the High Court of Tripura, as Guest of Eminence, and Ratan Datta, Chairperson of the State Bar Council, as Guest of Honour.
Welcoming the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh, Founding Vice-Chancellor of NLU Tripura, outlined the university’s journey since its inception and highlighted its growth, expanding national character and commitment to producing competent, ethical and socially responsible legal professionals.
Addressing the newly admitted students, Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao appreciated the university administration’s efforts to provide quality legal education and assured the institution of his full support in its continued development.
He encouraged the faculty and students to give their best and work towards building strong professional and institutional relationships. He also assured that the university would have fully functional academic and administrative blocks as well as hostels for boys and girls within a year.
Justice S. D. Purkayastha urged the students to consistently strive for excellence, stressing that there are no shortcuts to success and no substitute for hard work. He called upon the young law students to remain disciplined, committed and dedicated to their goals.
Ratan Datta also addressed the gathering and encouraged the newly admitted students to make the best use of their time at the university and develop themselves as responsible members of the legal profession.
Students admitted from different states across the country participated in the programme, reflecting NLU Tripura’s growing national reach and character. The university has been strengthening its position as a prominent institution for legal education in the Northeast.
The two-day programme provided the new students with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the university’s academic environment, faculty members, institutional structure and student activities.
Special sessions were also organised to sensitise students about the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, 2013, and the functioning of the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). Sessions were also held to create awareness about drug addiction and mental health-related concerns.
On the occasion, the university released a report titled “Empowering Indigenous Communities: An Analysis of Social Welfare Schemes in Tripura for Scheduled Tribes”, along with the Annual Reports of the Legal Aid Committee and the Kautilya Society.
