Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers celebrated the 80th Independence Day of the country at ‘Swarnagram’ in Warengbari, Gomati district, on Saturday, with a programme aimed at fostering patriotism, cultural awareness and a sense of responsibility among schoolchildren.
‘Swarnagram’ is an initiative of Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers aimed at developing Warengbari as a model village. As part of the initiative, the company has also adopted the ‘Swarnagram Shikshalaya’, a residential school project run in collaboration with Glory Academy, Warengbari.
The project seeks to strengthen existing facilities and amenities for resident students, provide proper nutrition and study materials, engage dedicated teachers and sports instructors, and offer scholarships to meritorious students.
The Independence Day celebration began with the hoisting of the national flag, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and the National Song, ‘Vande Mataram’. The schoolchildren subsequently demonstrated yoga and other self-development exercises and presented songs and dances showcasing the culture and traditions of the Reang tribal community.
Sweets and gift hampers were also distributed among the students as part of the celebrations.
On the occasion, Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers presented a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as a periodic contribution towards developmental activities at Swarnagram and the Shikshalaya.
Award-winning designer from Mumbai, Amit Porwal, attended the programme as the special guest.
Expressing his happiness at being part of the celebration, Porwal said he was “really overjoyed” to be at Swarnagram and described it as a “wonderful initiative” of Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers. He also said he was honoured to participate in the Independence Day celebration in the remote corner of the country.
Rupak Saha, Director of Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers, said Swarnagram was a special project that had begun as a dream 17 years ago and had now been realised to a considerable extent.
He attributed the progress of the initiative to the patronage of concerned government departments, support from the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram, contributions from associates, and, most importantly, the participation of the people of Swarnagram and the encouragement of friends, well-wishers and the media.
“However, much work remains to be done,” Saha said, adding that celebrations under the Swarnagram Shikshalaya calendar, including Independence Day programmes, were aimed at developing the potential of young people and strengthening youth power in the model village.
The celebrations brought together schoolchildren, their parents and local residents, creating an atmosphere of joy and patriotic spirit at Swarnagram.
