A government doctor, who was arrested allegedly raping a nurse on the pretext of marrying her, who was sent for 14-days judicial custody till December 1st next.

Police sources said that Dr Surajit Das (32) a doctor at a government-run hospital at Teliamura, developed a relationship with the nurse who works at another government hospital in Agartala, after the two came to know each other through social media. Das reportedly had physical relationships with the woman after giving a false promise of marrying her.

The nurse lodged a complaint against the doctor at West Agartala police station on Wednesday last after the doctor denied to marry her.

Sources added that when the nurse insisted on early marriage Surajit Das physically assaulted her and flatly refused to marry. Having returned to Agartala with a broken heart the nurse filed a complaint and Teliamura police station authority arrested Dr Surajit Das yesterday on appropriate sections of the IPC and produced him in Khowai CJM court . Having perused the case diary and listened to the pleas of the government assistant public prosecutor, the CJM Dharmendra Das sent Dr Surajit Das to fourteen days jail custody . The incident has created a furore among doctors and health department officials as nothing like this happened earlier in the state .
