In a major breakthrough after a long gap, the police of Birganj police station in Amarpur under Gomati district have solved a gold chain snatching case and arrested two persons, including a snatcher and the buyer of the stolen jewellery.
The incident occurred two days ago in the Gandhari area along the Amarpur–Udaipur road, where a youth allegedly snatched a woman’s gold chain while she was travelling in an e-rickshaw (Tomtom) before fleeing into a nearby forest.
The victim initially reported the incident to Maharani Outpost. Acting promptly, the outpost informed Birganj police station, following which an investigation was launched.
During the probe, the police gathered intelligence and identified the suspect, who is reportedly a resident of the Shankarpalli area of Amarpur town. Under the supervision of investigating officer Nirmal Das and with the assistance of the police intelligence unit, Birganj police arrested the accused from the Tulamura area of Udaipur late on Saturday night. The police also recovered the stolen gold chain and cash under his possession.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to selling the stolen gold chain to a person in Tulamura for approximately Rs 1.27 lakh. Based on his statement, the police arrested the alleged buyer of the stolen jewellery and brought him to the police station the same night.
A case has been registered against both accused, and the police have launched a detailed investigation. Officials are also examining whether the incident is linked to a larger gang involved in similar snatching crimes.
The daylight snatching on the Amarpur–Udaipur road has triggered concern among local residents, who say such incidents are uncommon in the area and have created a sense of fear among commuters.
