Red alert issued in Unakoti amid Measles surge; push for MR and HPV vaccination
The Health Department has issued a red alert in Tripura’s Unakoti district following a sharp rise in measles cases, with authorities stepping up efforts to boost MR (Measles-Rubella) and HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination coverage.
A crucial sub-divisional review meeting was held on Friday at the conference hall of Kailashahar Circuit House to assess the progress of ongoing vaccination drives against measles, rubella, and HPV. The meeting placed strong emphasis on increasing immunization rates and spreading awareness among the public.
The session was chaired by Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapla Debroy. Key attendees included Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Unakoti, Dr. Shirshendu Chakma; District Immunization Officer Dr. Sandipan Bhattacharjee; Family Welfare Officer Dr. Amit Debbarma; representatives from the World Health Organization; the Sub-Divisional Magistrate; BDOs of Gournagar and Chandipur blocks; along with Panchayat members, social workers, and health officials.
During the meeting, current vaccination data for the sub-division was reviewed, and areas with low coverage were identified. Detailed discussions highlighted the importance of MR vaccination among children and HPV vaccination for girls aged 14, particularly for preventing cervical cancer.
Authorities urged local influencers and religious leaders to actively promote vaccine safety and effectiveness. Health workers have been instructed to conduct door-to-door surveys at the Panchayat level to identify unvaccinated individuals.
It was also decided that special vaccination camps will be organized across all blocks in the coming weeks. Awareness campaigns are already underway through LED displays, local TV advertisements, public announcements in remote areas, leaflet distribution, and door-to-door outreach. Schools are also being engaged, with teachers playing a key role in educating parents.
According to the Health Department, these coordinated efforts aim to significantly expand MR and HPV vaccination coverage across Kailashahar sub-division.
As of Friday afternoon, a total of 260 measles cases have been detected in Kailashahar, triggering widespread concern among residents. However, officials have clarified that despite the red alert, there is no need for panic, assuring that the situation is being closely monitored and necessary measures are in place.
