Iran targets Israel, Tel Aviv strikes Tehran as Middle East conflict escalates

By IBNS
Jun 23, 2025..

Iran launched missile strikes on Israel while the country's parliament approved all measures to shut down the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz following the recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities,  even as Israel, according to latest reports, mounted attack conducting air strikes across Iran and bombing Tehran on Monday.

Just six or seven missiles were launched from Iran in four waves in the attack a short while ago, according to updated IDF assessments as quoted by The Times of Israel.

No injury has been reported so far.

Iranian network Press TV said Iran carried out the new phase of "Operation True Promise III" with a barrage of new-generation missiles.

"The 21st phase kicked off at around 12:00 pm local time on Monday, with informed sources saying many new-generation missiles were used in today's retaliatory operation," it reported.

Press TV claimed: "According to the source, Kheibar Shekan, Emad, Qadr, and Fattah-1 missiles were used in Monday's operation, which struck important Israeli military facilities across the occupied territories, including in Safed, Lachish, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Beit She’an." It also posted a video of a missile hitting Ashdod.

The last IDF update on X said sirens were blown across the nation when Iran launched missiles targeting the country.

"Sirens sounding nationwide as Iran launches another missile attack," the IDF wrote onX.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Iran launched missile attacks on Israel, injuring 86 people.

The 30 projectiles that targeted Israel caused widespread damage to residential areas in Tel Aviv and the central town of Ness Ziona.

The Health Ministry reported that among those who arrived at hospitals were two in moderate condition, 77 in good condition, four victims suffering from acute anxiety, and three more people who were undergoing medical evaluation and whose condition had not been immediately determined, The Times of Israel reported.

Israeli Strikes

The IDF said it "struck 6 regime airports across western, central, and eastern Iran, destroying runways, underground hangars, refueling aircraft, F-14, F-5 and AH-1 aircraft."

"The destroyed aircraft were meant to stop IAF jets. The IAF impaired takeoff capabilities from these airports, as well as the Iranian military’s ability to operate its air force from them," the IDF said.

The IDF earlier said approximately 20 IAF fighter jets conducted intelligence-based strikes using over 30 munitions on sites across Kermanshah, Hamedan and Tehran.

"Targets included: Missile storage & launch infrastructure; Radar and satellite systems used for aerial intel; A surface-to-air missile launcher near Tehran," the IDF said.

"These strikes are part of our ongoing effort to degrade the Iranian regime's military capabilities and secure aerial superiority to protect Israeli civilians," it said.

A CNN crew in Iran’s capital Tehran said they witnessed a major Israeli aerial bombing on the north of the city on Monday. The crew heard several jets pass overhead before a series of strong explosions rocked the building they were in, the US news channel reported.

It is unclear what the target of the bombing was, but the northwestern area of Tehran was covered in thick black smoke in the immediate aftermath, it said.

Iran approves Strait of Hormuz shutdown

Meanwhile, the Iranian parliament has approved all measures to shut down the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.

The decision is still not final.

The country’s Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s top security authority will need to finalise the decision.

A senior Iranian lawmaker, Esmaeil Kowsari, told Press TV that the Majlis (Iranian parliament) has agreed to close the key artery for global energy trade in response to the American aggression and the silence of the international community.

Kowsari, a member of the parliament’s committee on national security and foreign policy, said lawmakers have reached a consensus on the closure of the strait, though the final decision rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

“The parliament has come to the conclusion that it should close the Hormuz Strait, but the final decision lies with the Supreme National Security Council,” Kowsari said.

Strait Of Hormuz is a strategically crucial point

The  Strait of Hormuz is located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

It is considered as one of the most critical chokepoints in global trade.

According to local media reports, 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through it.

It is the only sea route that connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is home to major oil producers such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE.

Experts have long warned that any disruption or closure of the strait can lead to immediate and major spikes in global oil prices and disturb the global energy security, reported Press TV.

Strategic experts told Press TV that the direct American military intervention will prove costly for the US and the Donald Trump administration, especially if the Strait of Hormuz is closed.

Some experts believe that the global oil price is likely to move up in the first week if the Strait is closed.

Zionist Enemy Made Grave Mistake, Says Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has vowed "punishment" for the "Zionist enemy" in his first remarks after the US struck his country's three nuclear sites.

In a message for Israel, Khamenei wrote on X, "The Zionist enemy has made a grave mistake, committed a great crime; it must be punished and is being punished; it is being punished right now."

Trump Claims 'Monumental Damage' To Iranian Nuclear Sites

US President Donald Trump has claimed "monumental damage" was caused to the Iranian nuclear sites by Washington's overnight strikes on Tehran, media reports said. However, some independent experts analyzing commercial satellite imagery have been quoted by NPR saying the nation's long-running nuclear enterprise is far from destroyed.

In a post on Truth Social, the President claimed, "Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term!

"The white structure shown is deeply embedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!"

Trump on Saturday announced bombing Iran's three nuclear sites and said that with this operation, there would either be peace or more tragedy for Tehran.

The sites are Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

Iran-Israel Conflict

The conflict started a week ago when Israel launched airstrikes against Iranian nuclear and military sites, primarily targeting uranium enrichment facilities to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Iran and Israel have been trading missiles and drones at each other since the conflict between the two Middle Eastern countries began recently.

The war began when the Israeli military launched "Operation Rising Lion" and attacked Iranian cities, saying it had concluded Tehran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon.
